Dreadful Jokes and SecUnit Bonding

Summary

Someone huffed a light laugh. I turned to look. SecUnit? It spotted me looking and turned its face away, annoyed.

"I've got another one! Did you hear about the submarine industry? It really took a dive." Ratthi said, grinning and staring at me expectantly.

I rolled my eyes and groaned. I like Ratthi but his sense of humour is complete shit.

Someone huffed a light laugh. I turned to look. SecUnit? It spotted me looking and turned its face away, annoyed.

I looked at Ratthi. He looked at me. Then back at SecUnit.

Had it just laughed? At Ratthi's shitty joke?

I wanted to send him a message over the feed, but SecUnit could always see all of those and it wouldn't appreciate us gossiping or asking questions about it. Frankly that would be awkward for all of us.

Before the pause in conversation got too long, Ratthi jumped back into it.

"You didn't like that one? That's fine, I've got more. Why do birds fly south for the winter?"

He paused.

"I don't know," I said, for the fifth time during this conversation. One of the jokes would be funny, I was sure of it. Actually I wasn't, not at all, but frankly watching Ratthi pull out a million garbage jokes was its own kind of entertaining.

"Because it's too far to walk!" Ratthi finished, grinning wide.

Another soft breathy laugh. I did my best to ignore it, but I had never heard SecUnit laugh before. I hadn't even known it could laugh, I had barely even seen it smile.

Ratthi's eyes were lighting up but he didn't turn to look.

"Okay, how about this one. I never wanted to believe that my dad was stealing from his job as a road worker. But when I got home, all the signs were there."

SecUnit lost it at that one, turning and resting its head against the wall as it laughed its ass off.

Ratthi and I couldn't help our own grins at hearing that sound.

Its laugh was strange, too light and breathy and rapid, but was so good to hear.

I hoped I would get the chance to hear it a lot more.
